The long-awaited Persons with Disabilities Act officially came into force after being passed by Parliament in December 2023 and gazetted in April 2024. This marks a significant milestone in Malawi’s journey toward equality, dignity, and full legal protection for persons with disabilities. The Act provides a comprehensive legal framework that upholds the rights of persons with disabilities in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). It mandates inclusive education, accessible health care, non-discrimination, employment opportunities, and accessibility in physical and digital environments. Mzuzu Disability Organization (MZUDO) welcomes the operationalization of this law and calls on all government agencies, duty-bearers, and service providers to ensure full implementation. This is a crucial step toward building an inclusive Malawi where women and girls with disabilities can thrive, participate equally, and influence decisions that affect their lives.
